EA Exam Online in 2026: International Remote Testing and PSI Rules
This article tells EA candidates whether remote testing is available to them in the 2026 cycle, which PSI rules apply, and how international versus domestic eligibility differs so they can decide how to schedule.

The answer to “Can I take the EA exam online?” depends on where you are testing.
For the current 2026 cycle, the IRS schedule lists international testing as remote-only. PSI also offers remote testing for domestic candidates, alongside U.S. test-center appointments. The appointment flow is the source of truth for the delivery methods currently available to you.
PSI administers the SEE after taking over from Prometric on March 1, 2026. The vendor changed; the exam still has three parts, 100 questions per part, and 3.5 hours per part.
Current availability
International candidates
International appointments are remote-only for the current cycle. The international testing window runs September 1, 2026 through February 28, 2027.
The PSI portal is the source of truth for your country and appointment. It will show the delivery method available for your location. Do not rely on an old Prometric page or a third-party screenshot.
Domestic candidates
The domestic testing window runs July 1, 2026 through February 28, 2027. Domestic candidates can choose an in-person PSI center or an eligible remote appointment when the portal offers it for their location and profile.
The annual blackout period is generally March and April while the IRS updates the examination for the next tax-law cycle.
What remote candidates need
If PSI offers a remote appointment for your location, review the current technical and room requirements before paying. At minimum, plan for:
- a computer that passes PSI's system check;
- a stable internet connection;
- a working webcam and microphone;
- a private testing space;
- a clean desk and no unauthorized devices or notes; and
- enough time for identity verification and the room scan.

Current fee and score
The current SEE testing fee is $317 per part. Old pages that describe a separate $66 IRS fee plus a $209 vendor fee are stale as a current budgeting guide.
Each part has 100 questions. The current PSI scoring information describes 85 scored questions and 15 experimental questions, with a scaled passing score of 500 on a 200–800 scale. Treat every question as scored because the experimental items are not identified.
How to schedule
- Get a current PTIN if you do not already have one.
- Start from the IRS enrolled-agent page.
- Follow the current link to the PSI scheduling portal.
- Select the SEE part and review the delivery options displayed for your location.
- Confirm your name matches your unexpired government-issued photo ID.
- Pay the current fee and save the confirmation details.

What did not change
The PSI transition did not turn the exam into an easier test. The SEE still covers Individuals, Businesses, and Representation. Study from the current IRS content outlines, practice under timed conditions, and use the score report diagnostics after a failed attempt.
